Why wear one scent when you can wear your own?
Fragrance layering has become the defining approach to perfumery for a generation of scent lovers who'd rather create than simply consume. Instead of smelling like 'whoever wears that perfume', you smell like you. It's also highly practical — layering can extend the longevity of your fragrance significantly and is a great way to evolve scents you already love. It's one of the biggest fragrance trends of 2026, and here's everything you need to do it well.
The layering hierarchy: start from the bottom
Step one is body oil or unscented moisturiser. Fragrance adheres to hydrated skin far more effectively than dry skin. Apply a body oil — ideally one in a complementary scent — to damp skin after showering. Our GQG Body + Hair Oils are designed exactly for this: luxurious, skin-nourishing, and available in the same scent families as our EDPs. Step two is your body mist or hair mist. Our body and hair mists are light enough to wear alone or as a mid-layer. Step three is your eau de parfum — your statement layer. Apply to pulse points: inner wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears, inside the elbows.
Choosing what to layer
Within family: pairing a vanilla body mist with a vanilla-amber EDP deepens and enriches the same scent story. This is the easiest and most reliably beautiful approach. Contrast with anchor: pair a fresh or fruity base layer with a warm, woody EDP. The top layer gives brightness and lift; the EDP grounds it with depth. Floral over musk: a romantic combination — a musky skin scent as the base, a floral EDP over the top. The musk gives the florals something warm and intimate to settle into.
How to use body mists in your layering routine
Body mists deserve their own note because they're often underestimated. They're not a compromise version of a perfume — they're a genuinely different product with a different purpose. Our body and hair mists are formulated to be used all over — body, hair, even fabric — so they envelop you in scent rather than projecting from a point. Hair is an excellent fragrance carrier because it moves and releases scent throughout the day.
